As we’re getting enquiries about running socially distanced garden science parties for families and small groups, I’ve addressed some of the FAQs I’ve received regarding these in this blog. Some parents are excited about having science entertainment to celebrate their child’s birthday, but some parents who are concerned. Hopefully this blog will answer any queries you may have.

ARE WE EVEN ALLOWED TO HAVE A GARDEN PARTY?
Yes! Our current science parties are aimed for your family, and not for inviting a load of people to come to celebrate. Government guidelines say that we are allowed to meet socially in groups of six whilst maintaining the 2 metre distance between different households. So, if you have a family of 5, our staff member will be that sixth person. If you are a family of 2, you can invite 3 other children, if you are a family of 3 you can invite 2 others. The rules are strict, and 6 people is the maximum.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE SCIENCE PARTY?
You can still choose from any of the themes: Crazy Chemistry, Roald Dahl, Magical potions, Beauty or Devine Slime, but there will be some differences in this unique situation. The main difference is that we won’t be able to have any of the children helping us with the science show and demonstrations. This means that the party will be slightly shorter in duration – about 1 hour and we’ve reduced the price to reflect this.
We have tweaked some of the activities too so children from different family groups can maintain the 2 meter distance.

HOW SAFE WILL THE SCIENCE PARTY BE?
The kit we bring for the children to use will be cleaned beforehand, as well as the science items they get to keep. There is loads of interaction still, but there is no getting the kids up to be helpers, nor can we bring lab coats and goggles for children to wear at the moment, until it is safe to do so.
It’s important that you know that I follow these guidelines www.gov.uk/guidance/working-safely-during-coronavirus-covid-19/homes. You don’t have to read it all, but it is there if you have any other concerns.

HOW MUCH IS A SCIENCE PARTY?
We’ve reduced the price to £150 (was £175), plus mileage, although garden parties in the Barnstaple, Bideford and Braunton areas are not charged mileage. The reduced price reflects the fact that we’ll be using less resources (only 5 guests) and that the party is likely to be slightly shorter than our usual parties. The party will be hands-on and fun, with lots to make & take home.

WHAT IF I INVITE MORE THAN SIX PEOPLE?
If you choose to invite too many people we won’t be able to run the party for you, we will have to leave and no refund will be given. We must follow the guidelines too.

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT’S RAINING?
If it’s raining, and there is so safe cover, we won’t be able to do the party. . We’re not allowed to come into your house and therefore we will have to cancel or reschedule. If the weather is looking dodgy we will ring you in the morning to chat through the options In the case of cancelation a full refund will be given.

I STILL DON’T FEEL 100% COMFORTABLE WITH THIS, OR DON’T HAVE A GARDEN, BUT STILL WOULD LIKE TO CELEBRATE MY CHILD’S BIRTHDAY. WHAT CAN I DO?
I understand that not everyone will feel entirely comfortable with having a garden party yet. Covid-19 has affected everyone in different ways. We are running science classes online which may be suitable for you in the meantime.
